Thought you knew your cloak? Well let’s see. In today’s episode we delve into the cloaking devices from Star Trek. The Klingons and Romulans mainly. But let’s learn all we can about cloaking systems. Welcome to Cloaking Devices 101.

Some of this is would explain the Philadelphia Experiment and the teleportation of the U.S.S.Eldridge DE 173 from one place to another in 1943

Well I just found this channel. Have you done a video on the virus that made Klingons look different?

allistair61 15/09/2021 - 3:31 Chiều

at the Beginning of the video, one of you starts waving their hand in front of there face. In Germany this means "you're blind' or "look where you're going" as if to say to the driver who is just cut you off is clueless.

Shinzon's cloak is the primary reason why i have trouble accepting Nemesis is "canon" material. I mean, max warp, full shields and firing weapons through the cloak? Does she bake pizza as well?

casbott 15/09/2021 - 3:31 Chiều

One big weakness of cloaks that the Federation never exploited till Nemesis was telepaths, in that movie, a empath with a psychic link, but still.
Just have a full blooded Betazoid at the weapon station firing away at all the lovely unshielded (well, except for the Scimitar) ships by detecting the crew. Maybe even read the mind of an engineer to get the shield frequency of ships with shields up. And also know in advance when the enemy is going to fire and any tricks.
Okay so Ferengi are an issue, but they don't use cloaks, but can still be detected, just not read.
And why didn't Voyager build one, or even the Equinox ? The knowledge is there in schematics of what a cloak design is, a bit of research and they could build their somewhat working version. Plus all Federation ships had the replicator pattern for a state of the art cloak, able to be accessed by a fleet wide Admirals order in case of war with the Romulans.
Neither captain thought let's do some hacking of our database.
And we've all watched Enterprise and besides the Trip getting pregnant episode, which completely contradicts the Klingon canon of getting cloaking tech, there's the episode where they get their hands on a Suliban cell ship. Seriously don't leave it in your hanger while you do some exploring of a 20th century tech level civilization on the brink of war, then keep it sitting there for a few more adventures till it's lost. Hightail it back to Earth asap so it can be reverse engineered, which is probably what they did in the mirror universe. At the very least examine the tech and the rest of the ships systems so you know what you're up against, and pretty soon the NX -1GTI has not only cloaking tech, but proper phasers, shields and a warp drive that's internal and not sitting on two pylons saying hit me.

You didn't call it trek-nology…

I love Treknobabble!! I'd be an engineer if there was a Starfleet…

kris guntner 15/09/2021 - 3:31 Chiều

Guys I get that you feel the need to repeat the quote from the haynes manual about how cloaks supposedly affect the ship while firing weapons as you have a personal relationship with sternbach but since there isn't ANY example of that happening over DECADES of movies and episodes you should have made it clear it CAN'T be considered canon but simply his opinion and "expanded universe"material for the sake of accuracy.
The haynes manual is in the same category as the other manuals,or star fleet battles, fun to read so long as they don't conflict with onscreen evidence.

Cut it out with all the Expanse comments, people. I love The Expanse too, but it has absolutely nothing to do with this video, and is inappropriate here.

Hunter Gray 15/09/2021 - 3:31 Chiều

So in ENT did the romulans use the mark -1 or did for a hundred years the romulans never uptaded their mark 1

Thank you!! Great episode. I for one love technobabble.

It was always my impression that the cloaking device that Kirk stole from the romulans was merely the essential component of the system that made the Cloak work, and that the ship had other subsystems that actually powered and distributed the cloaking field itself. And that these could have been relatively conventional devices that were prepared for and tuned to be ready for this essential component that would make it also work on the Enterprise.

Kind of like having an entire laptop built to certain specifications with everything ready to go just slacking the hard drive which is just one small component that that makes the rest of it work.

I'm sure the cloaking device is intertwined and routed throughout the ships in a variety of ways; at some point you do need that quad-core Pentium chip to make everything work! LOL

Really great show guys, the humour that you inject while discussing these topics make it so much more enjoyable than those channels that just show graphics and bark out dry specifications.

For me, this is one of the main things that makes Trekyards unique and superior to the other shows out there. The personalities involved and the rapport you have with each other increases the viewers' enjoyment since it's so much more personal resulting in greater fan engagement, and also increases the trust factor because it's clear the amount of research that has gone into each production as well as the complicated visual Graphics needed to accompany most of them, and we feel through watching the series that we've gotten to know you each a little bit and what you contribute to the show and that makes it all the more rewarding to be a part of the community.

The fun interplay at the beginning with Sam often being the straight man to Stuart's opening salvo always makes me chuckle and throughout the video you guys seem to really be enjoying talking about the subject rather than making it seem like a chore and a bore like so many others do.

I am so glad you guys are enjoying your growing success and continue to enjoy sharing in analysing all these different aspects of Trek with the rest of us!

Kudos, and plan to be a fan and supporter for many more years to come!

Derek Zhao 15/09/2021 - 3:31 Chiều

Would you guys consider doing a Fleetyards video about the Rocinante from The Expanse? There's lots of cool stuff to talk about there, like the unusual ship layout for thrust gravity, the science behind railguns, and stealth tech!

At 16:18, I have to debate about the idea that General Chang was arrogant about not raising his shields while cloaked. As we were made aware of when the Enterprise detected a neutron surge after dinner, it was made apparent via passive sensors. Active sensors were already searching for that same neutron surge, and if Chang had raised his shields the surge would've spiked by potentially 100x's, making the cloak ineffectual. Yes, Chang was arrogant in his reasoning (most Klingons are when it comes to combat) but there was an actual scientific reason for not raising shields. When the Enterprise finally fired, and he saw the torpedo tracking, he knew that a lone Bird-of-Prey against a Constitution class alone was out-manned, and outgunned, but against a Constitution and Excelsior class… shields were a moot point. They were dead. Raising shields at that point would've been tantamount to someone applying sunscreen while being in the cone of fire from a flame thrower.

Ok ok, I think I'm getting the point about the depth of the detail available to the hard core. It's still a lot like my Tolkien thing, where you can read 10 times the info than is actually in The Hobbit, LOTR, or The Silmarillion (assuming you view The Silmarillion as a mainstream book). I shake my head, thinking of all the Trekker frustration that could have been avoided if the show had kept you guys (or other uber experts) on retainer for an encyclopedic take, e.g., phone calls from writers at 2am stuck until clarity. Sigh. I suspect the showrunners thought Trek had died on TV, which gave them some creative license to mix stuff up enough that Trek could get a decent, second shot at life on TV. Hence, serious season message. But fans only noticed discrepancies with canon and totally missed or just didn't give a shit about the Natural Evil our Natural Crew confronted (a season about dark psych and our manipulative leaders, as per the vid description in the only Trek vid posted to my account).

I love Trek too. Just not what it had morphed into near the end. This is how a Trekker defends the franchise (the next 50 years, not the last) from mindless, withering envy that only wants the show dead. Doomcock …

Tng season 4 Redemption, Part I
the attack Cruiser is attacked by bops Worf's brother comes to the rescue & fires a attacking bob which cloaks but you can still see it's Shield as worf's brother is firing.
